The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Frank Ruhl Libre is the open-source revival of the iconic Frank Ruhl typeface, originally manufactured in 1908 through a collaboration between Rafael Frank and the C. F. Ruhl foundry in Leipzig. Developed by Israeli type designer Yanek Iontef, this libre version brings the historic design into the digital era with variable weight support ranging from Light to Black across seven distinct styles.
The typeface carries Sephardi proportions and traces its roots to the Venetian types used by Daniel Bomberg for early Hebrew Bible editions. Rafael Frank intended to soften the contrast between thick and thin strokes, drawing inspiration from Fraktur traditions to create a more harmonious reading experience. The result is a serif face with dignified stroke modulation and sturdy construction.
Licensed under the SIL Open Font License, Frank Ruhl Libre works effectively for both short and extended text passages. Its variable font technology and multilingual support make it a practical choice for book design, editorial content, and academic publishing across Latin and Hebrew scripts.
