Fanwood Text

Fanwood Text is an open-source serif typeface designed by Barry Schwartz and released through The League of Moveable Type. It is a revival of Fairfield, the classic typeface created by Czech-American designer Rudolph Ruzicka and first published in 1940. Fanwood Text modifies the original Fanwood design with slightly darker strokes and reduced contrast, specifically optimized for screen readability on e-readers.

The typeface features sturdy serifs, moderate stroke modulation, and a generous x-height that ensures legibility at small sizes. Both roman and italic styles are included, with the italic carrying a gentle cursive flow that complements the upright forms. The overall texture is warm and bookish, rooted in the transitional serif tradition.
