Black Sam's Gold is a historical display font based on the handwritten lettering from an actual period map of a pirate shipwreck off Cape Cod. Created by Redruth's Basement Software, the font is named after Samuel "Black Sam" Bellamy, whose pirate vessel the Whydah sank in 1717. The letterforms were carefully traced from a map reprinted in National Geographic magazine.
This unique typeface captures the character of Middle and Elizabethan English writing. It features a bold, expressive style with flowing cursive strokes and slightly slanted uppercase letters that give it a dynamic and energetic feel. The font includes an extended character set with special ligatures and period-accurate characters.
Black Sam's Gold is ideal for pirate-themed designs, historical projects, game interfaces, and vintage map illustrations. Its legibility at smaller sizes sets it apart from many stylized display fonts, making it practical for both headlines and body text in themed projects.
