Georgia is a serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter and hinted by Tom Rickner for Microsoft Corporation in the year 1993. The typeface was released by Microsoft as core font in 1996 and again with an extended version in 1997. Initially, Georgia typeface was created to make small print and low-resolution screens more readable. For the design of Georgia, Carter was influenced by Richard Austin’s model of Scotch Roman from the 19th century and followed the styles for the print typeface of another model Carter was working on. The typeface was named after a tabloid headline “Alien heads found in Georgia”.
The font contains many traditional features of serif typefaces from the early 19th century. It features x-height, tall lowercase letter, lightened uppercase letter, vertical axis, ball terminals, less contrast and fine details and, alternate thick and thin strokes. In contrast to other modern fonts, Georgia contains true italic characters such as single-storeyed lowercase letters. The bold weight of the typeface is heavier than the normal weight to display small sizes on the computer screens with clarity.
Georgia has a total of 119 characters and 4 styles. The font displays elegance, versatility and high legibility. In 2007, The New York Times switched from Times New Roman to Georgia for its standard font. An extension of Georgia, called Georgia Pro was released in 2013 which includes a number of new designs.
