GFS Didot

The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
GFS Didot is a serif typeface based on the Greek typeface designed by Firmin Didot in 1805. Under the influence of neoclassical ideals of the late 18th century, Didot created this typeface in Paris. It was brought to Greece during the 1821 Greek Revolution by Didot's son and was immediately used in the publishing program of Adamantios Korai, a prominent figure of the Greek Enlightenment. The typeface became the standard for Greek publishing for nearly two centuries.
The modern digital version was designed by Takis Katsoulidis in 1994 and digitized by George Matthiopoulos. The Latin alphabet component is based on Hermann Zapf's Palatino. The font is maintained and distributed by the Greek Font Society under the SIL Open Font License. The design features the characteristic high contrast between thick and thin strokes that defines the Didone classification, with sharp, unbracketed serifs and vertical stress.
GFS Didot is widely used for Greek typography and works well for academic publications, classical literature, formal documents, and editorial design. The font's historical significance and elegant construction make it suitable for book typesetting, thesis formatting, and any project involving Greek text. Its neoclassical character also lends itself to luxury branding, formal invitations, and cultural institution identity work.
Type design by Takis Katsoulidis and George D. Matthiopoulos.
