Century Schoolbook was designed in 1919 specifically for readability in children's textbooks, and that foundational purpose still defines its character. The letterforms feature large x-heights, open counters, and clearly differentiated characters — design decisions driven by legibility research rather than aesthetic fashion, which is precisely why the font remains functional over a century later.
Morris Fuller Benton's design achieves something rare in typography: text that is simultaneously comfortable for extended reading and distinctive enough to carry personality. The moderate stroke contrast and slightly bracketed serifs create warmth without the stuffiness of more formal serif designs, making it equally at home in children's publishing, academic texts, and general-purpose editorial work.
The bold weight adds genuine emphasis without distorting the careful proportions of the regular weight — a detail that matters for typographic hierarchies in textbooks and documentation. Century Schoolbook competes with Georgia and Charter as a screen-readable serif, but its specific optimization for sustained reading gives it an edge in contexts where reader comfort directly affects comprehension.
