About Bell MT Font
Let’s introduce to all of you a serif typeface that has been around for two centuries called Bell MT. The journey of the Bell typeface started about 200 years ago. In 1788, the original version of this typeface was designed and cut by punchcutter Richard Austin under the guidance of publisher John Bell. In the aftermath of its popularity in newspaper and magazine printing, the typeface has revived many times and resulted in the modern metal version that is Bell MT.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Bell typeface was popular in the United States with artisan printers but faded in Britain. In 1931, Monotype Corporation revived and digitised the typeface. Monotype produced the hot metal Bell series that evolved from the original punch cuts made by Richard Austin for the British Letter Foundry of John Bell in the 1780s. It was not the same model that was used for the different text sizes of Monotype’s series. In the words of type historian James Mosley on Typophile “For 18 points and above (the metal type was cut in sizes up to 36 points) Monotype’s model was a larger type [than the model used for the text sizes], the ‘Great Primer’ cut by Austin. This has greater contrast in the capitals and a flat foot to letter a.” The digital Bell typeface nearly resembles the 18 point size of the hot metal version, which causes the difference in colour from Monotype’s original metal typeface text sizes.
