History
Avant-Garde Gothic is a typeface family based on the Avant-Garde magazine’s logo font. Herb Lubalin created the logo concept and headline typeface, then collaborated with Tom Carnase, a partner in Lubalin’s design studio, to turn the notion into a full-fledged typeface.
Ed Benguiat designed the condensed fonts in 1974, while André Gürtler, Erich Gschwind, and Christian Mengelt designed the obliques in 1977.
One version of the original designs is for setting headlines, while the other is for text copy. However, just the text design was chosen during the initial digitization, and ligatures and other characters were not incorporated.
