About The Font
The Foundry’s ‘Architype One’ series restored the Architype Renner font in 1997, making it one of the first types to be revived. Reproducing Paul Renner’s experimental geometric glyphs for the Futura font family, as well as letterforms that were never issued by the Bauer Foundry in 1927–30.
Renner started working on Futura in 1924, using traditional Roman inscriptional capitals as his starting point and inspiration. The goal was to create a harmonic union of uppercase and lowercase letters. The visionary aspects of Renner’s sans serif include circular shapes, clean forms, and simple principles, tempered with an optical correction to match prior font proportions. The spirit of the New Typography is still present. Although Renner referred to Futura as ‘Die Schrift unserer Zeit’ [the font of our time], I’m sure he’d be both pleased and surprised that it’s still in use; as a typeface, it’s one of early modernism’s crowning triumphs.
The optically efficient letterforms reveal a gentle structure with minimum contrast between the broad and thin strokes; this is the distinctive and eternal feature of Futura. ‘Geometric as it is, Futura is one of the most rhythmical san serifs ever designed,’ says Robert Bringhurst. Its classical proportions are elegant and humanistic, with vertical dimensions that are closer to Centaur’s.
Regular, Medium, Demi, and Bold are the four styles of the Architype Renner family. The old-style figures and experimental alternatives that Renner planned for the first release are included in this family; the pure geometric shape and precise details make Futura and Renner one of the most renowned and recognizable types of the twentieth century.
