The Abhaya Libre typeface is a serif font designed by Mooniak. It is a type of foundry based in Sri Lanka. The famous Argentine typeface designer Sol Matas created the Latin part of this font. Google Fonts funded the font design process and made the initial development and release in 2015.
The designer team has added large counters and small ascenders and descenders for optimized screen viewing. So, that could be a better choice for display purposes. Eventually, the font was released in 2016. It is available in 5 weights: Bold, Extra Bold, Medium, Regular, and SemiBold. Each of these weights contains 925 glyphs. The font is available in version 1.030.

Abhaya Libre ‘was fully redesigned from the ground up, based on FMAbhaya, to accommodate modern-day usages such as web, tabs, and smartphones with smaller screens.
FM Abhaya, designed in 1996, reinterpreted Sinhala letterpress typefaces from the 1960s. Abhaya derives its name from King Abhaya (474 BCE to 454 BCE) of the ancient kingdom of Upatissa Nuwara, which ruled Sri Lanka from 474 BCE to 454 BCE.
